Throughout history, kings, queens, presidents and politicians have had a shared affection for ice cream. However, there are a special few who have actually rolled up their sleeves and got to work in the ice cream industry.
Those who have been employed as ice cream scoopers include Harry Truman, who worked at Clinton’s Drugstore’s soda fountain, and Barack Obama. Then there are the politicians who have actually gotten into the ice cream business. Those who own or have owned ice cream shops include Charlie Melancon (3rd Congressional District, La.) and Betsy Markey (4th Congressional District, Co.).
My favorite political connection to ice cream has to be former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher. Prior to taking up residency at Number 10 Downing Street, Margaret Thatcher helped advance soft serve ice cream manufacturing with her work as a research chemist. Just think, the “Iron Lady” was really a “Mrs. Softy.”
So let this be a lesson to all. Study hard, work hard, and one day you can grow up to work in the ice cream industry. It’s got to be better than being a politician.
