I’m very excited to announce this week’s winner for my cartoon face contest. Denise Milligan sent us this image of Uncle Harry in front of Cardiff Kook. Cardiff is decked out all in pink to help bring attention to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Now, if you’re wondering — like me — who Cardiff Kook is, then — like me — you don’t live near nor have visited the Encinitas area of California.
You can find Cardiff Kook just outside the San Elijo State Beach campground. This 16-foot bronze statue of a surfer is officially known as the Magic Carpet Ride, but locals quickly took to calling it Cardiff Kook and, almost as quickly, began decorating it.
While the Kook’s adornments have become increasingly elaborate, the latest enhancement is perhaps the most worthy of attention. Thanks to Denise for this great picture and reminding us that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly, Uncle Harry’s ice cream cakes aren’t available in California, but I’ll be sending a check for the monetary equivalent.
