Doumar’s

My lovely waitress, Promise Johnson.

I have had a Marty McFly moment (sans DeLorean). Marty McFly, Michael J. Fox’s character in Back to The Future, shot back to the 1950s via Doc Brown’s DeLorean.

My magic transportation to the 1950’s came courtesy of Doumar’s in Norfolk, Virginia. This diner is straight out of the 50’: the architecture, the sign, and the curbside waitresses. Oh, those waitresses. They hustle from car-to-car, taking orders and calling everyone “hon” or “doll.” Now I just need a DeLorean.

Doumar's Randy Windley rolling a cone on the World's First Cone Machine.

What has this to do with ice cream? Well, back in 1904, Abe Doumar is claimed to have invented the first ice cream cone at the St. Louis World’s Fair. Abe also designed a four-iron waffle machine that is still in use at Doumar’s.

VEHICLE NAMING CONTEST. Every vehicle on every road trip needs a great name. I’ve got a lot of great entries for my truck. Keep them coming to uncleharry@uncleharrysicecream.com. Winner gets one of my trademark bolo ties. Contest ends July 17, 2010.
